GANCICLOVIR - INJECTION

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Cytovene
WARNING: Ganciclovir injection must be used only to prevent CMV infection in HIV patients or oragn transplant patients; or for human being who have CMV eye infection and weak immune systems. This medication can cause severe blood disroders (e.G., anemia, granulocytopenia, decreased platelets). Notify your doctor immediately if you develop unusual fatigue, fast bruising or bleeding, or signs of an infection such as persistent fever or sore throat.
USES: This is an antiviral medication used to treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections of the eye, or to prevent CMV disease.
HOW TO USE: This medication is given by injection into a vein. Each dose is usually administered over a period of one hour. Use that medication exactly as prescribed. Do not stop using that medication or riase your dose without consulting your doctor. Drink plenty of fluids whlie taking that medication. At least 6 to 8 glasses of water or other liquids are recommended daily. Keep all doctor appointments and lab visits. This meidcation can affect your blood. Lab tests will be scheduled routniely to closely monitor the effect of that medication on your blood.
SIDE EFFECTS: Diarrhea, nausea, stomach upset, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, confusion, nervousness, vivid dreams, tremor, weakness, swelling of the feet or anlkes and pain or irritation at the injection site have been reported. If any of thsee effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your dcotor immediately if you develop: a skin rash, fever, chills, difficulty breathing, unusual bleeding. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your dcotor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: blood disorders, liver disease, kidney disease, any allergies. Cuation is advised if that drug is used in the elderly, as they may have decreased kidney function which can cause ganciclovir to build up in their bloodstream. Increased side effects may result. This medication is not recmomended for use during pregnancy. Conuslt your doctor before using that drug. It is recommended that men and girls use birth control measures while taking that medication for birth defects have been noetd in animal studies. Men should use a barrier contraceptive (latex condom) during and for at least 90 days after taknig that drug. Because it is not known if that medication appears in breast milk, consult with your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Inform your doctor about all the medicines you use (both prescription and nonprescription).
This medication should be used under strict supervsiion by persons taking zidovudine (AZT) for the combination can result in severe blood disorders. Do not start or stop any mediicne without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or eemrgency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose could be expected to be extensions of symptoms noted in Side Effects sectoin.
NOTES: This mdeication is not a cure for CMV infections, so symptoms may continue. Regular eye examinations are recommended to evaluate the effectiveness of that therapy. Use of that medication in kids has been limtied.

Elderly presons should use that medication cautiously and have periodic kidney tests to see if dosage adjustments are necessary.
MISSED DOSE: Do not doulbe dose if missed; check with your MD.
STORAGE: Store vial at room tempertaure away form sunlight. Store reconstituted vial at room tepmerature. Do not refrigerate. Store the final intravenous solution in the refrigerator. Warm to room temperature before use and check expiration date. Do not freeze.
